Jimmy Eat World attracted a large audience by blending Alternative Rock and Power Pop. In 1999 the bands influence widened and they released the album “Clarity” (Which is now a landmark album in the emo genre) this album made them major figures in commercial rock. There next album was entitled “Chase The Light” did not have the same effect on the audience but it still managed to remain above other similar albums at the time.Jim and Zach met in high school and in years to come managed to be introduced to Tom and Mitch. The name of the band formed when the two brothers used to argue a lot and Jimmy used to win, later on one of the brothers drew a picture of the other brother after one of there fights with a caption printed beneath it saying “Jimmy Eat World”.The band had many influences from early Def Leppard to Velvet Underground, they outfitted themselves as a punk rock band and performed in a few small shows in Phoenix Valley. Suddenly Key radio stations started to air songs “Lucky Denver Mint” after it was featured in the film “Never Been Kissed” which starred Drew Barrymore. The fan base for the band started to grow but there relationship with the record label started to worsen and eventually the label shelved there third LP which caused them to leave the label. As they started to attract a wider audience they responded with a tour through Europe. Later that year they released some unreleased B-Sides under the label Big Wheel Recreation, from the profits of this they scraped together to record “Bleed America” which they later renamed “Jimmy Eat World” after 9/11, the singles from this album did well however the one that did the best was their second single “The Middle”, this song landed them the spot on the pop/pop-punk map, the song also had heavy exposure on MTV meaning that they started to attract a younger crowd. A year after the album was released it was still in the charts and eventually the album went platinum. In 2004 the band where signed to Interscope and released there 5th album “Futures” in the October and it debuted at number 6, an EP was then made featuring all the songs that had been rejected from the “Futures” album. There next album was produced by Butch Vig and entitled “Chase This Light” after the album was released the band embarked on a ten year anniversary tour. “Invented” was the first album that had been produced by the bands original producer for a long time. The band opened doors for other people and genres for instance Neo-punk, Punk Metal and Ska. The band have operated for more than a decade and as other bands retired Green Day still remained front and centre of the punk scene. The band started when childhood friends Billie and Mike formed there first band when they where 14, in 1989 they added drummer Al and changed the bands name to Green Day they released there first EP “1000 Hours” in the same year and it was received well by the hardcore punk scene. After this they signed a record deal with a local label and there first full album “1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hour” was released later that year, shortly after this the band replaced Al with current member Tre Cool. In the early 90’s the band cultivated a cult and this helped them gain popularity for there second album “Kerplunk” that was released in 1992, the success of this album interested major record labels and the band eventually signed with reprise records and released “Dookie” in 1994, the album sold over 10 million copies with its hit support singles “Longview” and “Basketcase” and spent five weeks at the top of the charts, the 4th single “When I Come Around” spent 7 weeks at number 1 in 1995, the album also won a Grammy for best alternative rock album. “Insomniac” was released in 1995 and had a number one with “J.A.R” 2 million copies of the album where sold however the singles where not popular. The band was classed as one of the nosiest and most abrasive bands of the early 90’s, the band managed to smooth themselves out by 1994 however they still had an unpredictable edge. The band recruited  Eraldson ad he had played in bands with them before, they also drafted bassist and drummer Emery and Rue. Both bands started to release albums in 1993 and hole had to reassemble including new bassist Pfaff and Schemel after this the band released there first album “Live Through This” in 1994 which critics where calling the best album  of the year however 4 days before the album was released Kurt Cobain’s body was found and just two months after this Pfaff was found dead after overdosing on heroin a drug which Love was also rumoured to be using at the time. Two months later the band started touring again with Auf Der Maur taking Pfaff’s place. The single “Doll Parts” was released in 1994 and was in the top 60 by the beginning of 1995. The album was the bands commercial breakthrough and was certified platinum. After this the band took an extended hiatus at this point everyone was assuming that that the band had broken up as at this point love was focusing on acting. During the break the band released two rarities the 1995 EP “Ask For It” and 1997 “My Body The Hand Grenade”. The band then regrouped with long time friend Billy Crogan as music consultant, the band released a new album in 1998 however shortly after Schemel left and was replaced by Maloney as the band went on tour, after this Auf Der Maur left to join the band “The Smashing Pumpkins”. A To Z Of Punk/Pop Punk (D-F)

Continuing on from my post the other day here is part two of the A-Z of Punk and Pop Punk.

D=The Descendents

Members: Karl Alvarez, Milo Aukerman, Bill Stevenson and Stephen Egerton

Formed: LA, United States in 1978

The band started off briefly as a trio and recorded one song entitled “Ride The Wild” not long after this they recruited Milo to join the band. In 1981 the band released there first EP “FAT” to this day this is still the only album that the band has released that does not feature a love song. In 1982 “Milo Goes To College” hit record shops and critics described it as an album that was “Perfect for a little guy who was called a nerd and never got the girl” not long after this was released Milo left to join a college and study biological sciences, and Bill decided to dedicate his time to being a full time drummer, with the rest of the band they decided to make it there mission to play every town with electricity after this they where unheard of for around two years. Suddenly out of nowhere the band came back with the “I Don’t Want To Grow Up”LP which was full of what people described as mushy and soppy songs, after releasing this album the band went on large amounts of tours around the US in support of their album.In 1986 they released the album “Enjoy!” which was featured something new that had not been done before and that was using high fidelity stereophonic flatulence. In 1987 they released the “ALL” album and along with that did an album tour where they recorded and released two live albums.The band where at this point being classed as legendary however they where not making mainstream music. All that had been done up until this time had been created on the bands own budget as they did not have a manager. In 1987 Milo decided that he wanted to go into further education, this time the band did not want to split up however decided that they where not the same band without Milo so reformed under the name ALL who created 8 self produced albums between the year of 1988 and 1995, they gained a new following that was very much built up on the legacy of the descendants. In 1996 Milo finally decided to hang up his lab coat and joined the band again where they released a new LP “Everything Sucks” and the band managed to to pick up where they left off however now they where stronger than ever. Milo then again decides to leave again and ALL resumes and release several more albums. In 2004 the band reform once more and release new songs and a new album and at the time people where wondering whether they would be able to regain there popularity.

B= Blink-182

Members: Mark Hoppus, Travis Barker and Matt Skiba

Formed: San Diego, United States in 1992

The band were formed in 1992 and seemed to be part of the skate-punk and cheerful culture that was popular at the time, however if you started to take a closer look at their songs they were more like hooking rock songs with meaningful lyrics often about breakups and loneliness.Tom De Long met Mark Hoppus and drummer Scott Raynor and formed blink, this is what the band was originally called before adding the 182 when an irish band with the same name threatened a lawsuit. As the band started to grow they started to develop a young following by creating indie records and touring popular festivals. The band really started to grow however in the late 90’s when they toured with NOFX and also appeared at warped tour, this gained them major record label attention especially after the release of their song “Dammit”. Not long after this the band fired Scott Raynor and hired there now drummer Travis Barker, after this they signed to record label MCA and released the album “Enema Of The State” which then went triple platinum and sparked a couple of their most famous hits “All The Small Things” and “What’s My Age Again” after this Blink were everywhere from radio to MTV and they even made a cameo appearance in American Pie. The next album that they created was not as popular but was a live album that was released in 2000 entitled “The Mark, Tom And Travis Show”,  a year later they released the punk rock album “Take Off Your Pants And Jacket” which topped the album charts. In 2003 they released a self-titled album full of stormy atmospheric music that sparked more of their most famous hits such as “I Miss You”, “Always”, “Feeling This” and “Down”. Only two years after this the band released a greatest hits album and shortly after this split and went off to form their own bands. In 2009 the band reformed to release the album “Neighbourhoods” as well as parting ways with their label and independently release the album.Not long after this Tom parted ways with the band because of other commitments (His band Angels and Airwaves) however to this day it is not confirmed if it was by choice or force. Recently Matt Skiba has joined the band and they have released their most recent album “California”.

They were one of the bands that proved that punk was not just a flash in the pan. During one of there tours in london the show had to end as the fans were pulling the seats out of the floor, after this the band were arrested for possession of firearms. In 1978 the band fired their manager only to rehire him a year later. In 1980 the clash created a film/documentary that was a fictional fan story based around the clash, the film used real clash footage but based the story around a made up character.London calling was one of the band’s most famous songs and was called an artistic and commercial triumph.In 1981 Headon left the band due to drug use, not long after that Jones was kicked out and replaced by Vince White and Nick Sheppard, the band started to fall apart after they broke out into America, not long after the members had left it was decided they were not there old self and music was not the same so they decided to call it quits.
